Encountering Bergman

Medium: Participatory performance with slide projection

Size: Variable

Duration: 10 minutes

Year: 2016

Description

The room is semi-dark and the audience stand or sit. The performance starts unannounced so that the audience slowly realises it is happening. A still image from an Ingmar Bergman film is projected onto a traditional screen in a semi dark room. Three members of the audience has been given envelopes with instructions to move me in relation to the scene in the film still using their voice and touch. The performance starts with their voice and my movement. They pose my body in relation to the image, changing the meaning and narratives. One after one the four participants, place me in relation to the image, close to the projection with the image visible on my body, sitting further away, moving against the stillness of the photograph. Every time a participant touches my arm or moves my head with the visual aspects of this intimate moment, touch the audience.
